Vigil eyed to protest 'special treatment' for Napoles
MANILA -- Members of the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) on Saturday gathered outside the Makati City Jail to denounce the alleged special treatment being given to Janet Lim Napoles.
"Ayaw namin po na maparamdam sa ibang kababayan natin na binibigyan ng VIP treatment ito. We feel that we are being robbed of that opportunity na dapat itong mga ganitong klaseng wanted persons eh hindi sinusundo, hindi hinahatid sa Camp Crame katulad ng ginawa ng presidente natin," VACC Chairman Dante Jimenez told ANC on Saturday.
Napoles, who is facing serious illegal detention charges, surrendered to President Aquino Wednesday night. She was detained at Camp Crame before she was transferred at the Makati City Jail.
Jimenez is calling on other citizens to assemble at the city jail and hold a vigil to let Napoles hear their grievances.
"Kami po ay masama ang loob dahil mga taxpayers tayo. Bibigyan mo ng ganitong VIP? Kalokohan 'yun, Mr. President," he said.
"Tayo po ay dapat pantay-pantay ang trato. Eh lumalabas may double standard of justice kayo," he added.
Jimenez also slammed the decision of the Makati Regional Trial Court (RTC) to grant the petition of Napoles to be transferred to another detention facility.
He said the Napoles' camp was just "overacting" when they cited security threats as the reason behind the transfer.
"We condemn this kind of decision. Mukha pong may mga nangyayari behind the scene," Jimenez said.
Napoles is facing charges of serious illegal detention of pork barrel scam key whistleblower Benhur Luy.
Napoles' brother, Reynald Lim, who is also facing serious illegal detention charges, is still at large.
Napoles is accused of setting up fake non-government organizations (NGOs) to siphon off billions of pesos worth of pork barrel from several senators and congressmen, who supposedly received huge cuts from the deal with the businesswoman.
A case has yet to be filed against Napoles involving the alleged misuse of the pork barrel funds. The government, through the Inter-Agency Anti-Graft Coordinating Council (IAAGCC), has launched a probe into the scam. -- With a report from Jeck Batallones, ABS-CBN News
