Will Pacquiao boycott Congress?

MANILA - House Speaker Sonny Belmonte on Friday advised boxing champ and Saranggani Rep. Manny Pacquiao to just show proof he already paid his taxes in the United States.

This, amid reports Pacquiao is switching from the House majority to the minority.

Pacquiao is a member of Vice President Jejomar Binay's United Nationalist Alliance, which is in the House majority.

"He's UNA now. In the House, UNA is with majority. Syempre I will be sorry to lose him. Why does he not just show his US tax receipts to the [Bureau of Internal Revenue]. Mahirap ba gawin yun?" Belmonte asked.

Meantime, Pacquiao isn't sure yet if he will report to Batasang Pambansa next week. YACAP party-list Rep. Carol Jayne Lopez, a close friend of Pacquiao, said the boxing champion has yet to inform her of his plans.

Pacquiao's congressmen friends are planning a simple gathering for his return to Congress following his successful fight in Macau. A resolution honoring the boxing icon is also being planned.

Pacquiao's celebration over American opponent Brandon Rios last Sunday was cut shot after the BIR garnished several of Pacquiao's accounts worth P1.1 million.

BIR Commissioner Kim Henares is questioning alleged Pacquiao's tax delinquencies amounting to P2.2 billion on prize earnings from top-billed matches in 2008 and 2009.

Pacquiao has criticized the BIR's move, saying he has duly paid taxes on his earnings in the United States.
