2 lucky OFWs get Christmas prize from DOLE
MANILA, Philippines – Two lucky overseas Filipino workers from Qatar finally received their prizes from the “Pamaskong Handog sa OFWs” during a simple ceremony at the Department of Labor and Employment in Intramuros, Manila.
Mary Grace Arcebuche and Romeo Ocampo, both working in Qatar, were happy with their cash prizes handed by Labor Secretary Carmelita Dimzon, Deputy Administrator Josefino Torres and representatives of institutional corporate partners.
The two OFWs missed out their chance to personally receive their prizes from President Aquino during the traditional “Presidential Salubong” at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport last December.
They said their arrival time changed because their respective employers changed their flight schedules at the last minute due to airline overbooking and failed to notify the welfare officer in Doha.
Arcebuche, a 40-year old single parent from Fairview, Quezon City, works as a beautician.
“I will use the prizes for the education of my four children,” said Arcebuche.
For his part, Ocampo, a chassis welder, said he would spend the prize money for the medical treatment of his sick child.
Aside from the two OFWs, another Filipino worker named Virginia Tulagan Mranda, a household service worker in Dubai, was able to receive her prize from the President upon her arrival in Manila last December 20.
Miranda, who hails from San Carlos, Pangasinan, has been working in Dubai for almost two years. She said she will use her prizes to buy a wheelchair for her sick mother and to renovate their “bahay kubo.”
Each of the three lucky OFW winners received prizes amounting to almost P300,000.
