MANILA, Philippines –The Philippine Embassy in Cairo is continuously monitoring the situation there after a state of emergency was declared following the death of dozens of Egyptians, the foreign affairs department said.

“Our embassy in Cairo is now assessing the situation and it has an standing advisory to the Filipino community to be vigilant and to make sure that they are safe and secure in their places of work and in their homes,” said Foreign Affairs spokesperson and Assistant Secretary Raul Hernandez.

Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi declared a state of emergency in three Suez Canal provinces that were hardest hit by the unrest.

Reuters reported that a nightly curfew would be introduced in Port Said, Ismailia and Suez starting Monday.

Hernandez said the embassy in Cairo will determine what measure can be undertaken to further ensure the safety of Filipinos there.
