MANILA, Philippines – A Filipino seafarer died after being shot by one of the Nigerian pirates who boarded and took command of their ship on Monday (February 4) off the coast of Nigeria.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed the report and said that eight other Filipino crew members on board the oil tanker Pyxis Delta are now safe.

“The DFA has confirmed that the seaman died in a hospital in Nigeria of gunshot wounds after he was shot by the Nigerian pirates,” said DFA Spokesperson, Assistant Secretary Raul Hernandez.

However, the DFA is still trying to get more information on the incident that led to the seafarer’s death.

ABS-CBN News learned from one of the victim’s relatives that he was shot after the pirates saw him use a radio. The pirates thought that he was using the radio to call for help.

“The hostage incident has been resolved,” said Hernandez.

The DFA likewise learned that the ship is now docked in Nigeria
