MANILA, Philippines – Fifty-four distressed overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) arrived Tuesday at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) from Lebanon.

The workers, all female, arrived at 10 a.m. on board a Gulf Airlines flight GF 154.

One of the workers, Ronalyn Cabanyos, had been working in Beirut for one year. She claimed her employer would beat her weekly with a broom or with the heel of a shoe.

Myrna del Rosario also suffered physical abuse from her employer. Del Rosario said her employer would pull her hair, slap and kick her.

She was relieved and thankful when the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) helped her return to Manila.

Most of the repatriated OFWs also complained of non payment of wages.

The repatriates have been offered temporary shelter at the OWWA Halfway Home. OWWA will also assist those who will be traveling back to their respective hometowns.

Reports said more than 40,000 Filipinos are in Lebanon and 5,000 are employed there as undocumented workers. With Zyann Ambrosio, ABS-CBN News
