CALGARY – Filipino employees received recognition for their quick response to help victims during heavy floods that hit the province last year.

A company's response to help flood victims last year earned Cargill Meat Solutions the Cultural and Organizational Diversity Award in the 2014 Immigrants of Distinction Awards by the Immigrant Services Calgary.

"This award feels very good for us. We are very proud of ourselves. But this is not for the award itself. It was something we had to do for our community and our employees," said Laszlo Bodor, human resources staffing coordinator of Cargill Meat Solutions High River.

Filipino Euben Sobrino is one of the company's employees. As Cargill's HR Settlement Coordinator, he first found fulfillment in helping fellow Filipinos find work and live in Canada through the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program.

"Ito ay award na talagang pinasalamatan namin dahil ito ay nagbibigay, you know, sa image ng ating mga kabayan especially sa ating mga kabayan na Pilipino na naging immigrant na sa programang ito," Sobrino said.

But Sobrino, along with two other Filipinos in their human resources department, Ailene Astudillo and Jonathan Corsino, also helped kababayans especially those new in Canada during the massive flooding last June.

"We are excited that Euben and Cargill have been nominated for the Organizational Diversity Award. It's a truly deserved honor for this organization. They've done so much to support newcomers in High River and considering it is a small, rather isolated place, it's nice to know that when newcomers come to the area they'll have someone you know who has their back and make their stay in Canada comfortable and we really appreciate all the work they are doing," said Carly Pender, communications and fundraising coordinator of Immigrant Services Calgary.

By helping out their employees before and after the floods, the company said it's just being a good corporate citizen of the province.

Filipinos in High River meantime are slowly getting back on their feet and rebuilding their lives thanks to Cargill and its employees.
