Fil-Ams demand better apology from Carolla over Pacquiao slur

NEW YORK - Author and psychologist Dr. Kevin Nadal has defended the Filipino community against racial slurs before, having led protests against ABC in 2007 after the network’s hit show Desperate Housewives made a slanderous comment about the Philippines’ reputation in the medical community.

ABC apologized and made amends after the snafu.

Now, Nadal has something—or someone, rather—new to focus on. Comedian and radio personality Adam Carolla, known as former host of Loveline with Dr. Drew, and The Man Show, recently disparaged boxer Manny Pacquiao and the Philippines in his podcast.

“Here’s how you know your country doesn’t have a lot going for it when everything is about Manny Pacquiao. Get a ***ing life as a country,” Carolla said. Carolla also said Pacquiao was illiterate, that the Philippines was only known for the boxer and its sex tourism industry, and that Pacquiao prays over chicken bones.

Nadal immediately published an online petition demanding an apology from Carolla.

“We need to fight every time and anytime someone does anything that’s unjust or anything that is discriminatory towards our community,” Nadal said.

With more than 3,000 signatures and counting, it’s now the number one petition on petitiononline.com.

Carolla has since apologized via his Twitter page, saying he’s sorry he offended many Filipinos, and that while he tries to be “provocative” and “funny,” he “crossed the line,” adding later that Manny is a great fighter.

Pacquiao has accepted Carolla’s apology, but Nadal says it’s not enough. Nadal wants Carolla to apologize on his podcast, so everyone can hear Carolla “in his own voice.”

Some Filipinos say however that there is a degree of truth to Carolla’s statements. Valerie Francisco of the Filipino womens’ rights group Gabriela USA says, “The issue of sex trade affecting women and children in the Philippines has been a really grave problem and a serious issue.”

Other Filipinos, however, believe paying attention to Carolla is not worth it, and may just give him attention he doesn’t deserve.

“If we waste a lot of effort just policing this guy, it might be a band-aid solution,” said Brian Tenorio.

Francisco adds that the end of statements similar to Carolla’s will end “when Filipinos change the character of how the whole world looks at them as migrant workers and global citizens.”

I think we should just be

I think we should just be less sensitive and learn to laugh, even at our own expense. What I see happening here is that more people would just think of us as insecure & severely sensitive brats who can't take a joke, even from a comedian. I don't see other comedians getting into trouble when they make jokes on other countries or even their own political leaders.
Besides, what do we have to show for ourselves? Sure, we have a lot of pride when it comes to our valued workers in other countries & what Pacquiao has done for us but what do we have to show for ourselves? Do we excel as a country? I don't think so, we have to go try our luck in other countries.
I do admit that he did cross the line in saying that Manny is illiterate. It isn't really a funny joke, even if it was directed at someone else. But then again, that kind of humor is what he is known for, isn't he?

the truth hurts

I recently heard about this issue after a friend mentioned it at work. Adam Carolla's comments were tasteless, rude, and simply offensive. I'm not a fan of Adam Carolla but you have to ask yourself, what makes him think of us that way? Is that what Filipinos and the Philippines appear to be? It that the impression we have on the media? Well, sad to say, it IS the truth. The Philippines, itself, is a mess: corruption in the government, "crab-mentality", private armies, overpopulation, poverty, prostitution, mail-order brides, etc. THAT'S WHAT THEY SEE, THAY'S WHAT THEY FEED ON. Until the Philippines learns to clean its act, then you'll get the respect you're looking for.

Anyway, the apology was accepted and we need to move on. Just look at this as a way to boost ratings --it sure got my attention.

Pacquiao moved on

Pacquiao accepted the apology and moved on. He's obviously better than the fanatics that worship him. He rose above petty name-calling and couldn't be bothered by what someone, somewhere says about him. A few, enlightened Filipinos don't want it to bother them either. Unfortunately, the deluge of small-minded fanatics just couldn't do the same. They want revenge (or even death penalty if they had it their way) and wallow forever in this pathetic victim-hood.

Underestimation from a rich

Underestimation from a rich mind is not unavoidable. All the crap that famous pinoy did (esp politicians), gave much impact to us filipino.
We heard it and i think we need to have it as a challenge on ourselves to continue doing what is best for our family and our country.
We don't need hate to fight back. Pacquiao didn't do any hate reactions everytime humiliation came in his way leading to what he is now, right?
Why are we so onion skinned? because of pride? let's swallow it and never gets distracted and later on we as pinoy will find them (intimidators) knocked down.
We've been encouraged by PACMAN and i think his strategy is the one we needed and hopefully those corrupt pinoys will be knocked out in the picture of being a true pinoy.

a no brainer

Mr. Adam carolla, if u have nothing to do, don`t underestimate Pilipino people. We don`t asked anything from you to help us out because you r nobody. U don`t have the ability like our champ Manny Paquiao. People only know you because of your sharp tongue. Being a comedian is a none professional level, the reason why you don`t know what is moral value and good manners..u r a no brainer. You are the one who is illiterate not Manny...go to school dumb ass...

Hindi porke't maraming

Hindi porke't maraming corruption at kalokohan sa isang bansa ay lalaitin mo na lng ng ganun-ganun na lang. RESPETO ang kelangan..bansa pa rin tayo na may dignidan.

after all tao rin namn tayo.

after all MAS MARAMING KABULUKAN SA AMERICA (US).

They are the "lamb-but-a-beast" that is being describe in Revelation.

But never to a point na magmakaawa tayong mag-apology sya.

Btw, never kong pinangarap na makapagtrabaho sa US. Pweh!

Who is the wiser?

If a bigot insult you because he is a bigot, would an apology makes a different to change his stance as a bigot? Who is the wiser, a wise man that ask a foolish question or the fool that can learn a wise answer?

I really don't understand the mindset........

"When injustice becomes law, Resistance becomes duty!" - Thomas Jefferson

Over doing it

Mr. Nidal is no champion for the people! Corrella is a comedian that made a mistake and apologized for it. It is enough! By demanding more from him, you are taking the majority Filipinos to a level of pompousness we don't want or need. Get over it! A wise man said "move on".

just send mr carolla a hate

just send mr carolla a hate letter with anthrax powder on it

PROBLEM SOLVED
