Remains of OFW killed in Honduras to arrive on Sat

MANILA,Philippines - The remains of a Filipino seaman who was murdered in Honduras will arrive in the Philippines on Saturday.

Jaycob Escobedo Gaban was a victim of a robbery hold-up in Roata, Honduras last April 7. His remains will arrive in Manila on April 19 via United Air flight UA183 at 9:10 p.m., and will be flown to his hometown in Bicol on April 20.

Labor Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz immediately instructed the OWWA to extend full assistance to Gaban's family.

A team from OWWA Welfare Office in Region V will visit the family of the seafarer and provide counseling.

Gaban, 27, was a native of Sorsogon, Bicol. He worked as an assistant cook on board the Norwegian Pearl.

He was reportedly using his iPad in a restaurant in the tourist island of Roatan, when a man tried to grab it. He resisted giving the gadget and was shot by the robber, who was later apprehended by the police.

Gaban is survived by his wife and daughter.

OWWA is ready to release the death and burial benefits due the family of Gaban, as well as scholarship and livelihood grant to one of the children and the spouse.
