MOUNTAIN HOUSE, California - About 3,000 fans came out to Mountain House, California last Saturday with only one purpose--to welcome home American Idol Top 11 Finalist, Filipino-American Thia Megia.
Despite being the youngest contestant to compete on the hit talent show, at age 15, Megia, now 16, impressed Idol judges Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson with her voice and demeanor of a seasoned performer.
On her elimination, Megia said, “There are some things that I wish I could have done more on the show but this is not the end. You’re going to see more of me. I'll have much more time to show all that I've got”.
Through the ups and downs of her American Idol journey, Megia said one thing remained certain: the love of her fans and supporters in Mountain House where she and her family still live.
She said, “You see so many people supporting you. It’s just amazing.”
Antonia Lising, Megia’s maternal grandmother, said she knew her granddaughter would be a celebrity someday.
“Maraming nagmamahal sa kanya," Lising said.
Those who adore her are young Fil-Ams who said she’s become their role model.
“She made me more interested in being in a talent show,” 11-year-old Gaby Garcia said.
Six-year-old Kayla Carpio said, “She makes me proud I’m Filipino.”
Megia, who’s under contract from Idol, was not allowed to sing for her fans during her homecoming. But she indulged the hundreds who lined up for autographs and pictures.
Homecoming organizer Celeste Farron said, “She gives us a sense of pride in our community, knowing that we have someone to root for.”
Fans will see more of Megia as she returns on stage with other American Idol finalists on a US tour this summer.
