Karen Davila among young leaders participating in WEF Manila
MANILA – Veteran broadcast journalist Karen Davila is among the selected young Filipino leaders who will take part in the Forum on Young Global Leaders at the World Economic Forum East Asia Summit to be held in Cebu and Manila next week.
Davila, an ABS-CBN journalist, said that the Philippines' hosting of the WEF will allows potential foreign investors to be presented with what they stand to gain by doing business in the country.
"The fact that the biggest businesses all over the world will be coming to the Philippines is a good opportunity for the country to show what we have to offer," she said.
The WEF East Asia Summit will be held from May 22 to 23 in Cebu and Manila.
Joining Davila for the Forum on Young Global Leaders are social entrepreneur Illac Diaz, Entrepreneur Reese Fernandez, furniture designer Kenneth Cobonpue and Senator Bam Aquino, an advocate of social enterprise development.
Diaz said the Philippines should take advantage of the event. "Filipinos are not just on the sidelines, but they are pioneering. In coming here, they [delegates] will be able to meet and be inspired by Filipinos," he said.
Fernandez, founder of the Rags to Riches brand, said "There are lots of things that we can share to the world. We have a lot of talent and we’ve been through a lot."
Cobonpue on the other hand gave credit to the resilient Filipino trait. "Filipinos are resilient in that they have the ability to withstand basically anything that is thrown at them."
For his part, Sen. Aquino said, "I always say that best thing about the Philippines is its people—the Filipinos. Given this opportunity [to host the WEF-EA], I think we’ll be able to get more people on our side and support our move to go into developed country status.”
They are the select group of emerging leaders known as Young Global Leaders (YGL) who belong to the under-40 bracket and who have demonstrated a unique commitment to serving society and the global community at large.
The forum will also allow the Filipino group to discuss socioeconomic situations across societies, share ideas with the end-view of improving the welfare of peoples.
