NEW YORK - A son of famous Filipina comedian is making a name for himself in the fashion industry in New York City.

Designer Robin Tomas is often introduced as the son of popular Philippine television show host and comedian Tessie Tomas.

"I'm very, very proud to say that I'm truly Pinoy and I'm trying to make it here in the big city, New York. I think this is the right venue for me to do that,” Tomas said.

New York is proving to be the right place for Tomas to nurture his passion for fashion.

After graduating at the Parsons School of Design in New York in 2002, Tomas interned at Valentino and Anna Sui, then worked at the men’s ware designer at the Gap, J. Crew and Tommy Hilfiger brands.

“The biggest thing that I've learned from my mom is the value of hard work and the value of humility," he said.

His hard work is paying off. His award-winning design for SUPIMA Cotton is now in production in Canada and will be sold in more than 30 Bloomingdale stores nationwide this fall.

The 33-year-old Tomas won the best reinvention of the men's t-shirt design award at the SUPIMA competition early this year. SUPIMA is a promotional organization of American pima cotton growers.

“He is a very talented designer,” said Francesca Hermijanto, Marketing Director of SUPIMA Cotton.

“Alam ko naman na si Robin ay magtatagumpay dito sa New York. Kailangan lang talaga ng tulong ng mga Pilipinong pwedeng magkaroon ng impluwensiya dito. Kasi ang design ni Robin ang magatataguyod sa kanya sa tagumpay,” said his friend and New York Fashion Stylist PJ Pascual.

While Tomas continues to work as a consultant for Gap and J. Crew, he is now focusing on his own New York label simple called “Tomas”. Balitang America
