YONKERS, NY – For the first time, the Westchester Filipino American community in Yonkers, N.Y. came together to celebrate Philippine Independence Day and with food and a Santacruzan parade.

Kababayans spent a day at the scenic John F. Kennedy Marina by the Hudson River with music and a feast of popular Filipino favorites like lechon and pork barbecue.

The highlight of the celebration — a Santacruzan featuring young Fil-Ams as reynas and sagalas.

“It’s so fun and overwhelming,” attendee Lolita Baluyot said. “Even though you’re far from home, it feels like you’re surrounded by family.”

“We still need to celebrate Philippine Independence Day because no matter what happens, we’ll always be Filipino.”
