New OWWA chief to take oath today
MANILA – A former official of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) will take her oath as the new head of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) on Friday afternoon
Rebecca Calzado, former DOLE assistant secretary, will be sworn into office by DOLE Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz at 3 p.m. Friday.
She will become OWWA's 11th Administrator.
Calzado was appointed by President Benigno Aquino III as OWWA Administrator on May 30, 2014. She replaced Carmelita Dimzon who reached the mandatory retirement age for government service officials.
Calzado finished AB Economics, cum laude, and M.A. Economics at the University of the Philippines.
After a brief stint as research assistant at the UP School of Economics, Calzado moved to the DOLE where she has since held various posts.
At DOLE, Calzado started as wage analyst, senior marketing officer and then chief employment officer at the Overseas Employment Development Board and the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration.
Subsequently, she worked as Head Executive Assistant of the Office of the DOLE Secretary, and later on was appointed as Deputy Executive Director of the National Wages and Productivity Commission. Thereafter, she held the position of Assistant Secretary for Policy, Programs and International Labor Affairs, as well as for Employment Facilitation and Manpower Development prior to her appointment as OWWA Administrator.
Calzado will formally assume her post on Monday, June 23, after the turn-over ceremony at 11:00 a.m. to be held at the OWWA Multi-Purpose Hall in Pasay City.
