HOLLAND - The whole Netherlands still grieves the loss of its Oranje football team in the World Cup 2010 when Spain bagged the championship beating the Dutch 1-0.

Not even the brightly colored streamers, flags and orange decors that still hang on the streets and houses can cheer up the mood in the country which remains somber and sad.

The Vuvuzelas and horns which created the loudest noises on Sunday have been put aside.

People in Holland gave their all and their fullest support on Sunday because the national football team made the finals again, after 33 years.

Around 8.5 million people watched the finals in the hope that the Dutch will finally capture the title for the first time, since joining the World Cup in 1934.

But Spain proved to be stronger.

However, even if their football team failed, the Dutch did not seem to show much feeling and controlled their emotions.

“It’s horrible. We all want Holland to win so bad, it’s just...no, I can’t believe it. It’s horrible,” said Wendolijn Kramer, a Dutch supporter.

The Pinoys seemed to be more affected by the Dutch’s failure in the World Cup because they also invested their time and energy in every match.

A mix of nervousness, tension and dismay were felt by the Pinoys during the last seconds of the finals which signaled the end of the Dutch team’s dream.

Dutch-Pinay Mingo Tomas was quiet and teary-eyed all throughout the match that lasted more than two hours.

“It’s really a sad day for me and I guess I’ll be sad the whole week, and maybe on Sunday when I go to church when I realize it’s all over,” Tomas said.

She added that even if she’s very Pinay at heart, she roots for the Dutch team and never missed any match.

Another Pinoy who never missed any games of the Dutch team is Ambassador Cardozo Luna. A staunch supporter of the Dutch team, Luna, however, did not feel bad when Spain won.

According to Luna, nobody lost in the 2010 finals because Spain’s win is a victory for Europe.

“We have seen how Holland fought valiantly, ferociously with all their might pero talagang ganon, bilog ang bola so congratulations to Spain but congratulations to Holland, too. At least, Europe got the World Cup,” Luna said.

Now that the Orange mania is over, the Dutch and Pinoys are going to wait for another 4 years before the next World Cup, and they hope that 2014 will be promising for them that time around, in the world of football.

World Cup

I felt the same when Deutschland lost against Spain. Nevertheless, their game with Uruguay was really great! :-)
