MANHATTAN, New York - Six talented Broadway performers are on a mission to raise enough funds to stage a show called “(UN)Natural Disasters”.

Originally staged in 2006, “(UN)Natural Disasters” tells the stories of the victims of hurricane Katrina in Louisiana.

Today, this mostly Filipino-American group called Broadway Barkada is restaging “(UN)Natural Disasters” to create awareness and keep disasters such as Typhoon Ondoy, Haiti earthquake and Hurricane Katrina in people’s minds.

“I believe as actors, as artists, we’re the storytellers of our generation. That’s our job. And as Filipino-Americans, if we can tell that story, we should,” said Broadway performer Loresa Carreon Lanceta.

Event organizer Joy Carreon Lanceta said, “I want people to see what it is like through a Filipino’s eyes and also open up the world to just have a Filipino story.”

These Broadway performers are hoping that by telling the stories of Filipinos who suffered in the aftermath of Typhoon Ondoy, there will be more help for victims in the future.

“People are very generous and willing to give money right away when it happens. But you know, a year later, people forget about it and they don’t remember that people still need help in these countries,” said veteran Broadway performer Brian Jose.

As the Philippines is frequented by typhoons every single year, organizers of this fund-raiser called “Songs For Hope” say there is a need for them to constantly remind not only Filipinos in the US, but mainstream America, that countries like the Philippines will once again need their help.

“We are committed to continue to produce other fund-raisers and benefits for the Philippines because I think so often people forget that these countries need help on a consistent basis. It’s something that has to be ongoing,” Jose said. Balitang America
