MANILA (UPDATED) - A Pinoy was among those shot and injured in the massacre at a movie theater on Friday in Aurora, a suburb of the city of Denvver, Colorado, USA.

Ryan Lumba, 17, was watching "The Dark Knight Rises," with his friends at Century 16 theater, where a masked attacker gunned down dozens of moviegoers at the packed premiere of the Batman movie.

At least 12 people were killed and 40 injured.

Lumba's mother, Remy, told ABS-CBN's Balitang America that her son was shot in the stomach and underwent surgery.

Lumba said Ryan was unconscious and was given pain medication. As of posting, he was already recovering.

Ryan recently graduated from Eagle Crest High School in Aurora and planned to go to the Western State College of Colorado.

His mother said, depending on his condition, the plan to go to college may be put on hold.

Chaos erupted when the gunman tossed some kind of grenade into the audience at a midnight showing, then opened fire on terrified patrons as they scrambled for the exit.

Local police arrested the killer -- identified by US media as 24-year-old local man James Holmes -- at the rear of the theater.

Witnesses described chaos chillingly similar to that depicted in the Batman films -- in which maniacal villains terrorize Gotham City -- implicitly suggesting the movie could have inspired the shooting spree.

They said several audience members had shown up in costumes, which could have allowed the gunman to blend in with the melee and complicated the arrest.

Police did not provide details about the casualties, but the film would have attracted scores of teenagers.

One witness cited by the Denver Post said he was watching the film when he heard a series of explosions.

Benjamin Fernandez, 30, said people ran from the theater and that there were gunshots as officers shouted: "Get down!"

Aurora is barely 20 miles (32 kilometers) from the scene of the 1999 Columbine High School massacre, in which two students shot dead 13 people and before committing suicide. The attackers had plotted the killings for a year. -- report from ABS-CBN North America Bureau; Agence France-Presse
