REDWOOD CITY, California – Only a few undocumented young Filipinos have taken advantage of President Barack Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, according to the Philippine Embassy in Washington, DC.

Eligible undocumented immigrants who came to the US as children and meet several key guidelines may request consideration for DACA for a period of two years.

If approved, they would be allowed to stay and work legally in the United States subject to renewal.

The Migration Policy Institute estimates there are about 20,000 undocumented Filipino youths in the United States.

But the US Customs and Immigration Service or USCIS reports that as of March this year only 4,041 Filipinos have applied for DACA and 3,644 have been approved.

In an effort to step up their campaign for DACA awareness among Filipino youths, the embassy is holding a DACA information session on July 30 and a DACA clinic on Aug. 16.
