MANILA, Philippines – A retired Filipino Navy veteran was shot and killed in what his neighbors described as a case of senseless killing in Oakland City, the Oakland Tribune reported.

Cristorey Mariano, 53, was assigned a night shift job in housekeeping at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center.

Mariano had just parked his car in front of his home on East 15th Street, East Oakland past 1 a.m. last Friday when he was shot by an unidentified gunman.

Reports said the victim collapsed and died on the spot after managing to run to his landlord’s door to ask for help.

“This appears to be someone who was a completely innocent victim,” The Oakland Tribune quoted Police Sgt. Tony Jones.

The victim’s neighbors said he had been staying in the apartment for about 2 years. They described him to be a quiet man.

“He minds his business. He doesn't mess with anyone. This is senseless homicide. It makes no sense. It's scary. I'm worried for my 7-year-old son and neighbors,” his neighbor Vanessa Wells told The Oakland Tribune.

Romeo Mariano said his brother was about to move out of the apartment over the weekend when the incident happened.

Mariano had been in the Navy for 20 years before retiring in 2002. He described his brother as a family man who worked hard to send money to his wife and 7-year-old daughter in the Philippines.

Police offered a $10,000 reward to anyone who would provide any information that would lead to gunman’s arrest.
