MANILA – The safety of overseas Filipino workers still in Iraq remains a primary concern of the government, the Department of Foreign Affairs said.

DFA Spokesperson and Assistant Secretary Charles Jose said that an estimated 900 Filipinos are in Iraq.

“Most of them are in the Kurdistan region, about 700 of them and about 100 plus in the Baghdad area,” Jose said.

Although most Filipinos are away from areas of conflicts in Iraq, the DFA still reiterated its concern for them following the statement given by the United States of targeted airstrikes against Islamic State fighters.

“Our embassy in Baghdad reports that most conflicts are isolated in provinces away from Filipino communities. So the embassy recommends we maintain alert level 2 in Kurdistan and alert level 4 for the rest of Iraq,” said Jose.

The DFA was able to repatriate 13 OFWs since it raised alert level 4 in Iraq last June 18. Jose said the repatriates were mostly from the Baghdad area.
