Pinoys in HK also irked over misuse of flag on casket

MANILA, Philippines - Some Filipinos working in Hong Kong feel that the Philippine flag was disrespected when it was draped on the coffin of slain hostage-taker Rolando Mendoza.

They also believe the move added fire to the rage already being felt all over Hong Kong.

“Kabastusan nga rin naman daw po na ilagay sa bangkay iyon sa isang mamamatay tao dahil ang flag ng Pilipinas ay ginagamit lamang para sa mga hero,” Ellen Biscocho, who maintains a computer shop and a store selling Philippine products in Hong Kong, told ABS-CBN.

Biscocho said that she has encountered several Filipinos who were verbally abused by Hong Kong residents as a result of the bloody 12-hour hostage drama in Manila’s Rizal Park last August 23.

She said that even her daughter Karen Joy, who goes to college in Hong Kong, was verbally abused by a student because of the Philippine police’s failure to rescue 8 Hong Kong tourists from the hostage-taker.

Karen Joy recalled one instance this week when, as she left the school, a student shouted at her saying all Filipinos are criminals.

To stop the heckler, Karen Joy said she was forced to say: “I’m not a Filipino. I’m Indonesian.”

In a statement on Friday, the Chinese embassy said it the draping of the Philippine flag on Mendoza’s coffin was an “irritating act."

"The person who deserves a national flag at funeral should be someone of heroism, decency and integrity, not someone who inflicts atrocity on innocent lives. This is nothing but a smear on the dignity of the Philippine national flag," the embassy said.

The body of Mendoza was laid to rest on Saturday in his hometown in Batangas.

His family did not attempt to return the Philippine flag on his coffin. The policeman, who served for more than 30 years in the Philippine police force, did not get a 21 gun salute, which is usually given to fallen heroes.

The local police force has said that after the burial, it will investigate who decided to put a Philippine flag on Mendoza’s coffin.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has denied providing the Mendoza family the Philippine flag. The local government of Tanuan also denied authorizing the draping of the flag on the hostage-taker’s coffin. – Report from Nadia Trinidad, ABS-CBN News

To stop the heckler, Karen Joy said she was forced to say: “I’m not a Filipino. I’m Indonesian.”

opinion_union: it just shows

opinion_union:

it just shows the emotionally driven state of filipinos:

In any country, if you are a medal winner, and upon any charges being levelled, all the medals are stripped off .. and the person lost the right to wear the medal, wear the uniform, the least is to have the national flag draped over the coffin.

The Authorities should have done the right thing by STRIPPING HIM OF HIS MEDALS WHEN HE WAS SUSPENDED AND SHOULD HAVE STRICTLY INSTRUCTED THAT THE MEANINGS OF THE MEDALS WERE LOST WHEN HE TOOK THE LAW INTO HIS HANDS.

Read up on internet on medal of Honor recipients having their medals stripped off upon conviction or being found guilty - everything except the purple heart can be taken back.

And even if he had the right to hold on to the medals, the moment he took the hostages and pointed a gun and innocents, he lost all reasons to even be dressed in his police uniform.

All forms of justification that he was forced to do what he did - holds no water. Hell, what do you think he would have got in any other country, except in good old RP ? A life sentence, or worse, when he started shooting the victims - death sentence. Don't tell me he was convinced he will be a free man and will have his job after executing innocents ??

If at all you need a PR campaign to show the world how RP lives, with honor above all, even after committing a crime - God Bless RP

OFW's - Mga Hangal !!!

Good vs Bad

Doing the right stuff for over 30 years and it took only 12 hours to destroy it.

He garnered 17 medals for his heroism and was one of the Top 10 policemen of the year.

No one will ever do the hostage-taking scenario if he's guilty.

He was being set-up because someone was very envious of his achievements.

So do you want to remove the flag? For me HELL NO!!!

With all due respect

I agree that it was wrong to use a National Flag on a murderer’s coffin, but has anybody ever thought that it might have been the family who draped the coffin in the flag????

As wrong as it is, if people would have agreed to give this guy a hero’s funeral, next the Ampatuans will get a private room in the Manila Hilton.

For all who voted for a corrupt official, you and your family as well as the rest of the Pinoy's will have to live with it. I hope you feel the pain you caused. Learn from it, people who sell their democratic vote should be threaded as TRAITORS.
