Pinoy couple in tragic murder-suicide in NY
SUNNYSIDE, NEW YORK - A resident placed a simple sympathy card next to a burning candle at the lobby of the apartment building where a murder-suicide of a Filipino couple took place Thursday morning.
Police reports say the Filipino couple was arguing when the husband, 41-year-old Amis Cale, lashed out in a fit of rage, allegedly stabbed his wife, 37-year-old Jennifer Cale to death.
Their 19-year-old daughter woke up to her mother’s cry for help and found her father standing right beside her mother’s bloody body on the kitchen floor. Cale then fled the scene, according to the police.
Neighbor George Suarez said he knew the Cales as a very nice and quiet family. He said he heard the daughter’s call for help early Thursday morning.
“I heard the screaming, I ran down, I knocked on the door when she opened, she was soaked in blood — the daughter, the mom was lying down on the kitchen,” Suarez said. “They said that he snapped over depression.”
Reports say Cale fled their third floor apartment even before his teen daughter cried for help.
Police reports said Cale ran to an elevated train station, just two blocks away from the murder scene, from where he jumped about 50 feet to his death.
Sunnyside resident Carlos Sanchez said he saw Cale’s lifeless body.
“It was early in the morning around 8, because he was being followed by the police, I heard that he just finished murdering his wife,” Sanchez said. “When he jumped, I remember that he landed on that area, on the sidewalk area. His leg was touching the street.”
Both Cale and Jennifer were pronounced dead on arrival at the Elmhurst Hospital.
Why Cale snapped and killed his wife of 19 years is still unclear. Police said he had psychiatric history and was upset over a recent death in the family.
Their daughter is now staying with relatives and declined media interviews at this time. She also declined to provide any information on her parent’s wake and burial plans.
