MUSCAT, OMAN – An argument involving three Filipinas and a Bangladeshi woman in Salalah turned ugly, resulting in the death of a Filipino domestic worker.
The victim was identified as Chiqui Schofield, 34, of Caloocan City.
Initially, it was difficult to get Information about Schofield’s death since Salalah is more than a thousand kilometers away from Muscat, the capital of Oman.
Based on the reports received by the Philippine Embassy, the incident happened last September 19 when the 3 Filipinas and a Bangladeshi national had an argument inside a manpower agency in Salalah.
“According to that report, during that altercation, something had happened. The deceased, Ms. Schofield, was hit in the head with a fire extinguisher by one of the Filipinas which caused her death,” said Vice Consul Jose Garcia III.
The 2 suspects were identified as Cristina de Leon and May Jovit. All 3 Filipinas worked as domestic helpers in Salalah and were temporarily staying at the agency as they were due to return to the Philippines.
Schofield died instantly after being hit by a fire extinguisher. The 2 Filipinas and a Bangladeshi woman were brought to the police.
“There is no clear information regarding their actual and official involvement in the death of Ms. Schofield,” said Garcia.
Garcia added that the case is complicated since those involved in the case are Filipinos.
The reason for the altercation was not clear as investigators have yet to release a report on the case.
“The embassy sent a team there last September 22. They stayed there for 3 days and they looked into the case, interviewing various persons involved in the case,” Garcia said.
Garcia said the embassy is now preparing documents for the immediate repatriation of Schofield’s remains.
“Once the authorities there give the signal or the approval for the repatriation, we can easily do that. Her remains could be sent back to her families in the Philippines." - Rowen Soldevilla, ABS-CBN Middle East News Bureau
