Binay in Rome for Calungsod canonization
MANILA, Philippines – Vice President Jejomar Binay arrived in Rome on Friday for the canonization of Blessed Pedro Calungsod.
Binay leads the delegation of around 5,000 Filipinos who will witness Calungsod’s canonization at the Vatican on Sunday.
The Vice President will attend the Holy Mass at St. Peter's Square on Sunday, which will signal the start of the canonization rites for Blessed Calungsod and six others.
Binay, who is also presidential adviser on the concerns of overseas Filipino workers (OFW), hopes that Calungsod will become the patron saint of OFWs.
He said Calungsod could serve as a great inspiration to the millions of Filipino workers abroad.
In a statement, Binay also said he hopes that Calungsod will serve as a role model for the Filipino youth.
"The presence of the thousands of Filipinos here and the millions more around the world who are eagerly awaiting Blessed Calungsod's canonization as the second Filipino saint reaffirms our faith as a nation. I hope his dedication and sacrifice will serves as an example for the Filipino youth to emulate,” he said.
According to presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte, accompanying Binay to represent President Aquino is Energy Secretary Rene Almendras.
Aquino is scheduled to leave Manila on Sunday for a state visit to New Zealand and Australia. -- Reports from Willard Cheng, ABS-CBN News; ANC
