Pinoys triumph in US dance contest
LONG BEACH, California - Four Southern California dance teams competed in the Enkore dance competition on October 16 at the Long Beach Convention Center.
The group Choreo Cookies from Encinitas, with many Filipino members, walked away with the trophy.
“It’s not about beating everybody, it’s all about dancing and being first is just a plus,” said Choreo member Keoni Madrid after being named the winners.
America’s Best Dance Crew (ABDC) alumni performed and attended, including Kaba Modern and the Beat Freaks.
Hype 5-0, who placed third in last season’s ABDC, came to the show fresh off their US tour to support their fellow dancers.
Kaba Modern’s original founder Arnel Calavario never thought that dance would help bring Asians mainstream exposure. Kaba Modern finished second in the first season of ABDC.
Calavario said, “One of the most proud things I think is dance is not just attributed to one stereotype or race, I think it’s now more diverse and that’s the beauty of hip-hop, it’s for the community made by the community, it’s for the world.” Balitang America
