Pinoy family recounts how car rammed into house in Illinois
REDWOOD CITY, California – Filipino couple Eric and Leika Racho recounted how a car rammed into their house, which was burned to the ground.
The Rachos talked to Balitang America via Skype about their experience.
Their house in Hainesville, Illinois caught fire after an SUV plowed into their house and broke a gas line.
The crash happened around 4 in the morning on October 25. Eric was at work but Leika and her three young children were home.
Leika said she woke up to the screeching of the brakes and felt the impact of the car on their home. She immediately called 911.
“It was terrifying. All I knew was I had to get my kids out of the house,” she shared.
No one was injured following the crash that destroyed two townhouses and damaged another in Hainesville.
“It’s still hard for us. But we’re trying to bring back the normalcy in our lives. The kids are back in school,” Lieka said.
Adam Bileck of Kenosha, Wisconsin was charged with driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident. The two DUI charges are felonies and leaving the scene charge is a misdemeanor.
Bileck is being held pending a bond hearing Sunday.
“We’re still speechless. The police told us that he could have possibly fallen asleep behind the wheel,” Eric said.
Even in this difficult time, the Racho family said they are grateful to have the community’s support.
“It’s an overwhelming feeling that people, even those we don’t know, had been helping us," Eric said.
