Gov't to aid Pinay sentenced to death in Vietnam
MANILA, Philippines – Malacanang on Thursday said assistance will be provided to the 61-year old Pinay sentenced to death in Vietnam for drug smuggling.
“In general, kapag may kababayan na nagkakaroon ng kaso sa ibang bansa, ang pino-provide na standard assistance ng embahada ay legal assistance at consular visit sa place of detention,” said Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte.
Valte told government radio station dzRB on Thursday that Amodia Teresita Palacio has 15 days to appeal the case.
“Yun ang pagkaintindi natin. Iaapela yan,” said Valte.
Vietnam handed down the death sentence to Palacio for smuggling five kilograms of the drug methamphetamine. Palacio, 61, was arrested in April at the Hanoi airport.
Palacio was found guilty of repeatedly entering the country from Thailand to smuggle drugs.
Valte appealed to Filipinos to not allow themselves to be used by drug syndicates.
“Huwag magpagamit sa sindikato. Baka ulitin ng ulit. Ipaalala lang na huwag tayong magpabiktima sa ganintong modus. Kayo po ang nasa losing end of the bargain,” she said.
