BRONX, New York — 38-year-old Filipino construction worker, Michael Tristan Mananghaya was killed when a massive 40-foot-long industrial cooling unit fell from a crane and crushed him to death in Bronx, New York Tuesday morning.

Witnesses said Mananghaya was guiding the crane operator who was hoisting the air-conditioning unit at a construction site at the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital, when a chain that linked the massive air-conditioning unit to the crane allegedly snapped, dropping several feet, clipped the edge of a trailer and flipped onto its side on the sidewalk, pinning Mananghaya.

Eyewitness William Viera said, “I heard the trailer break and its refrigeration unit fall, off the trailer and landed on the sidewalk, one of the construction workers got away just by the skin of his teeth, the one that was crushed was leaning up against the wall, couldn’t get away, so when I ran up the block, I tried talking to him, to see if he would respond, then nothing, he was pretty much incoherent.”

Viera, who took some video clips of the tragic event from his cell phone, said it took the emergency responders about an hour to remove Mananghaya out of the accident scene to the hospital emergency room where he was pronounced dead.

“The fire department showed up minutes after but they had to figure out they will get the hydraulic jacks underneath to lift it up to be able to actually get him between the wall and this unit to get to him and stabilize him,” said Viera, “I was scared, I was actually just a few feet away from this thing, when you look at it, i could have been the one underneath this thing

Meantime, Mananghaya’s employer C&L Towing in New Jersey, as well as Agrekko — the airconditioning company -- has not responded to Balitang America’s inquiries at this time.

Sources close to Mananghaya told Balitang America that his remains is still being held at the coroner’s office in New Jersey today.

A native of Baliuag, Bulacan, Mananghaya is survived by his wife Malou Manansala Mananghaya and two daughters, and two other sons from previous relationships.

A funeral mass will be held on December 13 at the St. Anthony’s of Padua in Jersey City, New Jersey before Mananghaya will be laid to rest at the Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington.
