MANILA, Philippines - The inauguration of President Benigno Aquino III was not just a local event, as it also attracted the attention of international news organizations.

On Wednesday, the Aquino inaugural was the top story of CNN International, BBC, The New York Times, and Al Jazeera.

CNN said the inauguration is “a new era in the Philippines,” but it can also be called the continuation of a political dynasty.

The report described Aquino as the son of two revered figures in Philippine life: former President Cory Aquino and former Senator Ninoy Aquino.

It added Aquino made waves by naming a retired Supreme Court chief justice to lead a truth commission that will possibly prosecute former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

The BBC reported that in his inaugural address, Aquino made stinging references to the leadership of Arroyo, whose administration was dogged by allegations of vote-rigging and abuse of power.

Al Jazeera, meanwhile, said many Filipinos have high expectations of the new president, hoping he will alleviate poverty and end armed unrest.

But the report added that it would take a while for Aquino to achieve this.

The New York Times, meanwhile, cited several problems the Aquino administration inherited from the Arroyo government, singling out the economy, poverty, and human rights.

According to Aquino's media group, a deluge of applications for coverage of the inauguration from various television, radio and print media came in, not just in the Philippines, but from the United States and Europe as well.

Aquino's camp earlier said the number of foreign media covering the event shows how the entire world followed the triumph of democracy, from the victory of former President Corazon "Cory" Aquino in 1986 against Ferdinand Marcos, until her son "Noynoy" became president himself.
