MIAMI - A Florida church said it plans to publicly burn copies of the Koran on the ninth anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, prompting threats from Islamic groups and warnings the move will trigger a rise in hate crimes.

The Dove World Outreach Center of Gainesville, Florida said on its Facebook page it will hold an "International Burn a Koran Day" on September 11, asking other religious groups to join in standing "against the evil of Islam. Islam is of the devil!"

"Islam and Sharia law was responsible for 9/11," pastor Terry Jones told AFP.

"We will burn Korans because we think it's time for Christians, for churches, for politicians to stand up and say no; Islam and Sharia law is not welcome in the US," the organizer of the burning action added.

"We've got many death threats from jihad groups, but we cannot react by fear and we cannot compromise our beliefs. Somebody must stand up," Jones added.

Reactions to the Koran burning announcement were swift.

Members of the Al-Falluja jihadist forum have threatened to "spill rivers of your (American) blood" and "a war the likes of which you have never seen before."

Mainstream Muslim groups also denounced the move and lamented the sentiments promoted by the Gainesville church.

"Unfortunately in (Florida) and nationwide, Islamophobia are actually on the rise," Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) spokesman Ramsey Kilic told AFP.

"I'm more afraid of those who have anti-Muslim sentiments and may think this is a legitimate action and may want to attack a mosque or attack a Muslim on the street," he added.

However, Kilic said, "we are not taking any action to avoid this... we don't want to give attention to this, because that's what they want."

The Dove church's Facebook site, since the announcement, is rife with threatening messages and corresponding anti-Islam rants.

Besides the Koran burning ceremony, the Dove World Outreach Center also plans an anti-homosexual event August 2 outside Gainesville's City Hall. The "No Homo Mayor Protest" targets the city's first openly gay mayor, Craig Lowe.

The website also has for sale "Islam is of The Devil" T-shirts and books by pastor Jones.

All this just does

is proof how stupid some people are.
Burning the Koran will not solve world problems, just the opposite, it will create more friction.

I wonder why those people dont use their brains, only answer I get to this is that they dont have any.

Instead of burning the Koran, they should invite people of other religions to join a memorial mass and remember the unnessesary death of so many people.

For all who voted for a corrupt official, you and your family as well as the rest of the Pinoy's will have to live with it. I hope you feel the pain you caused. Learn from it, people who sell their democratic vote should be threaded as TRAITORS.

THIS IS TOTALLY STUPIDITY AND CHILDISH ACT

Do you think that you can weaken Islam by burning the Quran? If you think so, then why you did not do it before, why did the Israel not do it before.
This is totally Stupidity and Childish act.
What do you think if Muslims do the same by Burning also the Bibles plus the CHURCHES. What do you think will happen to Christians in the Muslim Countries.

THINK BEFORE YOU ACT.

Like a few others here have stated, this is not the behavior of a Christian.

What good will come of their Koran-burning? Retaliatory Bible-burnings? Muslims interested in learning about Christ and Christianity suddenly being turned off by these people? Christians outside of the USA being murdered because of this emotional publicity stunt? Even if Islam is of Satan, doing something like this will not turn anyone away from Islam, and may turn some from Christ.

TO SARAHROSH

Being welcomed in any country doesnt say whether it is good or evil. On the contrary, before I forget, you may check the roadsign leading to MECCA, then tell us who are those people not welcome to enter and tell us why.

US is a secular country whose primary ideology is globalization. It has no state religion. Whatever it does, it does for its own good. If it has done offenses, then let them be prosecuted under legal proceedings and NOT before a religious court.

I say no further. I just finished reading this article:

Im just curious on how people think

if islam is evil?

if Islam is evil then why are non Muslim still welcome to Muslim country? attacking of civilian's is not a work of Muslim and of the Muslim supporting this action.. why don't you burn the US flag for killing thousand of people in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, also in Vietnam and war in iraq as well as the Iraq. don't say that only US have authority to depend?

Japan

Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed during World War II, after Japan killed roughly 30 million people in East Asia, including many in the Philippines, and attacked the United States (in both Hawaii and the Philippines) before the USA ever took any military action against Japan.

The atomic bombings brought a quick end to the war, and saved many lives by making an American and Allied invasion of Japan unnecessary.

SOLUTION

For true Christians, "Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;" (Matt 5:44)
"Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword." (Mt 26:52)

Apostle Paul said "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?" (Romans 8:35)

Im just curious on how people think

koran

burning of koran is not the right solution to stop terrorsm, it is a useless suggestion.
