Chilean president's brother sentenced for drunk driving
SANTIAGO - A Chilean judge on Monday sentenced President Sebastian Pinera's younger brother Miguel to community service and a fine for crashing his Hummer jeep into a Mini Cooper car while driving drunk.
Judge Jaime Fuica sentenced singer and businessman Miguel Pinera, 56, to pay a fine of more than $11,000 and ordered him to serve 50 hours of community service in areas affected by the massive February 27 earthquake.
He also had is driver's license revoked for one year.
On October 3, while his older brother was still a presidential candidate, Miguel Pinera crashed his Hummer into a Mini Cooper owned by a woman named Maria Fernanda Koning, 24.
Pinera insisted in a statement that he always acted in good faith, including at the scene of the accident, and that the results of his breathalyzer test were negative when tested for alcohol.
However according to government investigators, Pinera fled the scene of the accident, did not help Koning -- who was rushed to a hospital -- and then took a breathalyzer test 13 hours after the crash when he had sobered up.
Pinera publicly apologized to the victim, but accused her of pursuing "political and economic goals" by publicizing the incident. Koning firmly rejected the charges.
President Pinera, 60, a political conservative, took office on March 11.
