Woman survives 15 days at bottom of well
BEIJING - A woman has been found alive but emaciated after surviving for 15 days at the bottom of an abandoned well in central China, local media reported Tuesday.
Su Qixiu, 38, was found in "astonishingly skinny" condition by rescuers Monday afternoon at the bottom of the 4-meter-deep well in Zhongfeng, a village in Henan Province, Xinhua News Agency reported.
Su fell into the well in the afternoon of Sept. 1 while gathering plants to use as herbal medicine. Her family searched for her in vain after she failed to return home.
Over the next two weeks, she survived by eating raw corn she had been carrying when she fell in the well and by drinking rainwater.
A photograph carried by Xinhau shows Su lying on her back at the bottom of the well, with her eyes open and her arms extended as a fire brigade rescuer stood over her. "Hungry. I'm hungry," she was quoted as saying in a feeble voice.
Xinhua said Su is now hospitalized in stable condition and receiving fluids, but she is not yet well enough to eat as the functioning of her internal organs has not yet recovered.
