WASHINGTON - A driver's license belonging to the woman at the center of the sex scandal engulfing Washington, Paula Broadwell, has been found by a jogger in a park in the capital, a spokesman said Tuesday.

Broadwell's license was discovered in Rock Creek Park, which cuts a swathe through central Washington and is hugely popular with runners, and handed it over on Sunday to the authorities.

"It was found recently and it is in our possession. It was turned in on the 11th," Lieutenant Bill Kellogg of the Maryland National Capital Park Police told AFP.

CIA chief David Petraeus resigned on Friday after admitting to a seven-month affair with Broadwell, a married 40-year-old counter-terrorism expert who had written a glowing biography of the storied US general.

In the preface to her biography, Broadwell, who is a keen triathlon runner, tells how she "sealed the deal" with Petraeus by beating him in a final sprint during a 2008 run along the Potomac River in the capital.

"We have not heard from her at all," Kellogg said, adding that if Broadwell did not contact the park authorities within 90 days, her license would be sent back to her current home state of North Carolina.
