FEEDBACK

Estrada pardon

I thought with all the daily news about corruption, bribery, cheating, etc., going on in the government, we as a country had already reached rock bottom. The latest act of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo assures us that the bottom is not even within sight. I am at a lost for stronger words to describe my feelings of dismay and disgust. I can only wonder what else should happen to this God-forsaken country before we Filipinos act unselfishly and start caring for our country.

She’s doing what she feels is right for the country,

President Arroyo, we salute you for your good decision and intention. Pls do something for us naman.

You got to be kidding me! Well, all I can say is, if he is guilty send him to jail then. That's another reason I would never plan to live back in the Philippines. Nothing but corruption. The poor gets poorer and the rich gets richer. What a shame to Gloria! And shame on me as a Filipino here in Turkey and other Filipinos abroad.

About weeks ago, I was so proud of my country because they convicted Erap (which I believe is 100% guilty). Now, I despise politics in the Philippines! There should be no reason to pardon him. Erap didn't even sign the request for pardon, he didn't even respect the decision of the Sandiganbayan and the worst part is Erap and Jingoy Estrada are laughing at Gloria Arroyo now.

The kind of justice in my beloved country is now out in the open. It seems it is cursed and doomed forever. Whoever leads the country, he/she always ends up corrupt. No one can change the country but the people themselves. A lot of times, I wonder if it is better to kill all the Filipinos and replace them with new breed of uncorrupted citizens. Maybe it will prosper?

Justice will prevail no matter what. Resign Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo!

Now you have to admit this, Filipinos are really stupid people. I, myself, is ashamed to be a Filipino. People in all different countries are really laughing at us. We have no dignity, our race is really so embarassing. I was right to left the Philippines. Even here in the US, I'm avoiding the Pinoys kasi hanggang dito dinadala pa rin nila ang masamang ugali nila. Manloloko at corrupt pa rin. Kahit nandito na sa America.Nagagalit tayo pag nilalait. Iyon ang totoo, tanggapin natin, and then baguhin natin ang ugali natin para mabago rin ang tingin nila sa atin.

The Philippines is into self-distructive mood and, if we don't change, we're doomed! Sayonara, ukenam!

Whatever prompted her to grant pardon to Erap is something only she, and perhaps her close advisers, knows. I think she is fully aware of the consequences. Let's leave it at that. Can the country now move forward with the President and the other leaders of our country focusing on the economy rather than on divisive issues? There are other more pressing problems that the President has to address.

Dear ABS-CBN,

I have been an avid reader of your online website for years. I consider it a gift that I can keep abreast with all the current events and pressing issues that my beloved country goes through day-in and day-out. I have celebrated with every Filipino triumph from our "Pambansang Kamao" to our Mt. Everest climbers and I have cried with them with every tragedy that befell our motherland.

I am so proud to be a Filipino. I have been away for 20 years now. Except for three brief vacation periods, I have not been home. I, and many of our brethren here in the U. S. are bothered by the present situations involving our so-called democratic and duly elected officials. What the hell is going on over there?

One of the biggest questions I have is why the so-called First Gentleman almost always seems to manage to figure out in the country's biggest scandals. Ano ba 'yan?

This Erap pardon is the last straw for me. I gave this current president every benefit of the doubt that I could muster, but she managed to disappont me everytime. I was thinking of coming back and retiring in my beloved country, but that prospect is slowly being eroded by the direction our leaders are taking. Delicadeza is dead in the Philippines.

What happened to the Filipino people power that we were so proud of? Who is putting these corrupt politicians in check? When are we going to take action and once again earn the respect of other nations by dislodging these leeches from our motherland's veins? Come on brothers and sisters, we can still do it. We do not need to use the same methods and instruments we utilized during the EDSA revolts. We just need one big voice to condemn these erring officials and maybe a little nudging. We cannot sit idly by and be impotent about the attack on our country and constitution. We have cleaned Malacanan twice, there is no doubt we can do it again.

Your kababayan,

4. Ang impeachment ni President Arroyo
5. Ang baho ng Malacañang kailangan bumango.

I'm with President Arroyo before but this time the pardoning of Estrada is a big mistake. That was the biggest fish ever caught but they let him go. Show no fear, President Arroyo. What will happen now to General Garcia? What estrada did was way way over General Garcia.

Estrada pardon

It is now in the open the kind of justice in my beloved country. One for the poor and one for the rich/corrupt. It's seems it is cursed and doomed forever. Whether male or female president sits in the government, same result CORRUPTION. No one can change the country but the people themselves. I have been away from my own country since 1978, but never was I so bothered by the magnitude of corruption and total abuse of power by GLORIA ARROYO, her husband, and their cronies--this administration is blatantly committing all kinds of anomalous transaction, and if caught-they just come out with most stupidest excuse that I have ever heard, and tells it to the people in a nonchalant attitude--MY LORD-TAMA NA-MAAWA NA KAYO SA MAHIHIRAP...RESIGN GLORIA!!!!

You got to be kidding me???? Well all I can say is if he was guilty and sent to jail then so as most of the Philippine government starting at the top, the First Gentleman.. more than half of the politicians are crooked than if Estrada is jailed then should most of the politicians in the Philippines.. That's another reason I would never live back in the Philippines.. Nothing but corruption. The poor gets poorer and the rich, getting richer.

We, Filipinos abroad were saddened about the pardoning of Estrada. We believe it was wrong, imaging the so many years of trial only to be freed after a couple of months. We are now wondering where is the justice we are supposed to be following.

Dear all concerned,

Well, what can I say...

Not so good news, I guess.

Mrs Arroyo has recently pardoned the unpardonable!  Let's see if this act can be substantiated or justified at all.  Mrs Arroyo stated the following reasons why she pardoned Joseph Estrada (Source:  National News of ABS-CBN website; as of 2:47pm):

1.         To heal the rifts in society made by two People Power uprisings   -  Let me ask you this.  What rifts are we talking about here? Rifts between or among whom?  Was there no rift prior to People Power 1? Was there not the people supporting LABAN and people supporting KBL, prior to People Power 1? Honestly, do you really know exactly what the causes of these rifts are or were?

2.         Exercised her right as President to pardon prisoners who are at least 70 years old  -  Oh for God's sake! So what??!! Nelson Mandela was put behind bars for 27 long years. Ninoy was arrested, put behind bars, was removed of his human rights; mentally and psychologically tortured; and (the list never ends...) was place under solitary confinement!  Yet these 2 people have done nothing wrong to society.  Mandela was released at the age of 73 years old.  Ninoy was released after 7 years and 7 months...

3.         Estrada had already endured six years of house arrest and had been convicted by the Sandiganbayan of plundering millions of pesos from the nation's coffers while he was president - I just do not know, for the love of God, how Mrs Arroyo can even consider the 6 years of house arrest as having "endured" by the former president!  Maybe Mrs Arroyo was meant to use the word "enjoyed"!  A prisoner who enjoys the comforts of a second home having all the amenities not an ordinary prisoner or Filipino would get!  A prisoner who can go to Hong Kong; a prisoner who goes to and from any place in his elegant vehicle!  A prisoner who can give press releases and call a press conference.  A prisoner who can go back to his house in San Juan; and so on....

4.         "[The pardon] is out of sensitivity to a sector of society who continue to identify with [Estrada's] circumstances," - Let me ask you again... Can you clearly make out this sector of society who "continued to identify with Estrada's circumstances"?  If you go back to my 3rd point, I don't think there would be a single person who can really identify with Estrada's circumstance in the Philippines! Prove me wrong, and I will tell you, the Philippines is no near the recovery route, 100%!

Well that's how it goes in the Philippines, I guess... A politician who is a proven womanizer, proven gambler, proven thief; and a convicted criminal, who "endured" 6 years of house arrest, gets a reprieve from a president who has her own unresolved issues herself, as if nothing happened.  Only in the Philippines.... My poor Philippines....

You know what is more annoying?  Estrada even said, "I believe that history will vindicate not only this executive act but also my innocence,"   The nerve!!!  This guy does not even feel any remorse for what he has done!  I bet this guy is laughing hard; and having the grand time of his life by now...

So what's next after this?  Mrs Arroyo eventually gets impeached herself; and similarly pardoned?  That won’t be surprising....

With disgust,

Dennis of Sydney Australia

What a shame to Gloria! and shame on me as a Filipino here in Europe. About six weeks ago I was so proud about my country that they convicted Erap (which I believe 100% guilty) now, I despise politics in Philippines! There should be no reason to give pardon, Erap didn't even sign the request for pardon, he didn't even accept he's guilty, he didn't even respect the decision of the Sandiganbayan and the worst is Erap and Onggoy Estrada are now as I guess laughing at Aling Gloria... not President Gloria.

Yet again, Philippines is infested with rotten corrupt officials and I think that will be the trend for the next 50 years.

Ronnie Ramos

It seems that the government's drive against corruption is all for show. The excuse being given about Erap's age is a flimsy one. If that is true then all prisoners in government prisons should then be released for 'humanitarian' reasons. One concrete lesson can be learned from all this: it pays to be corrupt!

Philip Beley

The pardon of Erap by presidential clemency is more of a scheme of the law rather than a rule of the law, more of a political expediency rather than a humanitarian act of mercy. Moreover, granting a pardon without an apparent remorse on the part of the convict as in the instant case is a distorted sense and abuse of Christian justice and symptomatic of an extreme lack of respect for the law and the judicial system.

It is really alarming to see and hear how this case went that long and it turned out like a consoling and favorable for some...favoring Erap while making our country suffers a lot...and so the people.

I respectfully value the importance of our economy but I do value most the vitality of justice in our country. On a personal note, giving pardon to Erap is indeed unfair. While forgiveness is a need, justice is a must and absolutely necessary! I can't find sufficient reason that is, regarding this case, which fundamentally shows that Erap must be pardoned. Is it for the common good or for personal agenda?

Justice will still prevail no matter what!

Ibang klase na ngayon ang konstitution ng Pilipinas, nakalagay sa page 1: Convicted, pero sa likod may nakasaad na Convict and Pardon nakakadismaya, is not good.

I am angry but not surprise of the president action today. She is sending a message to all corrupt politicians that it’s ok to cheat and commit a crime because you get a pardon anyway. She made this move to divert all the attention that she is getting regarding her impeachment issue. It is political move. I am a proud Pinoy but what’s happening in the Philippines is giving all the Filipinos shame and disgrace. I wish all the Filipinos take the time and think who they want to run the country. They need to realize that because your a good actor that doesnt mean that you can lead the country to prosperity. Wake up Philippines.

It is too early to grant pardon to the convicted Ex-President Estrada. The act will not strengthen political discipline. That is why we have very dirty politics now. We missed the kind of politics during the time of Quezon, Osmena, Roxas. Osias, Recto & Diokno to name a few. There was politics with high integrity and discipline, and not a canto & illusionary politics. When one is convicted of a crime defined by law, it is no different than those convicted under penal laws that penalize those guilty thereof. It is very unfortunate for those convicted now serving their penalties who do not have political influence and money to rely on. There is no political will to follow one kind of rule of law for all, regardless of their position in life, rich or poor or otherwise. At this point of time the pardon granted is highly irregular and wrong. It will be more divisive and destructive among the people.

Ramos nagbabala on Arroyo's pardon, etc.

Dear sirs,

INSTANT REACTIONS

Sen Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada
I would like to thank this administration, most specifically Mrs. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, for granting the pardon of President Joseph Estrada and this is coming from the heart.

Former President Corazon "Cory" Aquino
I am happy for former President Joseph Estrada and his family. I pray, that as a free man, former president Estrada will harness the lessons he has learned from the sufferings he had endured and continue to serve our less fortunate brothers and sisters.

Senate President Manuel Villar
I join the great number of Filipinos in welcoming the executive clemency extended to the former president by the Arroyo government. Despite the Sandiganbayan conviction, President Estrada remains in the heart of the masses.

The executive clemency extended to former President Joseph Estrada is a great step towards reconciliation, which is vital to our country’s unhindered passage to progress. This act emphasizes the value of humane consideration and compassionate justice.

President Estrada has suffered enough, having been incarcerated for more than six years. The pardon will give him time to care for his ailing mother, Doña Mary, who needs his solace and love at this most opportune time.

Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero

Sen. Ana Consuelo “Jamby” Madrigal
The executive clemency of Erap is a double edged sword. While I commiserate with President Erap's plight, the issuance of the executive clemency by Mrs. Arroyo at a time when she and Mike Arroyo are being hit by revelations of graft and corruption, particularly the new exposé of Joey de Venecia today is a media stunt to ensure only her political survival. The pardon of Erap as definitely used as a political weapon to diffuse present controversies. We must not stop pursuing all investigations on the graft and corruption of Mrs. Arroyo. I hope that the efforts of the minority opposition in the House of Representatives to impeach Mrs. Arroyo will not be compromised.

Senator Richard Gordon
If we are going to show the world that we are for the rule of law, then there should be no pardon for Estrada. (from Agence France Presse)

Akbayan Rep. Ana Theresia “Risa” Hontiveros
By granting pardon to Erap, GMA has undermined rule of law. This is a political insurance for her and she hopes that the same privilege would be extended to her once she face accountability for her own crimes. She trampled upon the indignation that she used to get herself into power. Let us mark this day as a day of impunity, a setback against our struggle against corruption.

Bayan Muna Rep. Teodoro Casiño
Pardon granted to Erap smacks of an opportunist political maneuver rather than a magnanimous act of justice. The least PGMA should have demanded was an admission of guilt nd some acts of remorse and/or restitution. The executive privilege of granting pardon has been reduced to a crass political move to neutralize PGMA's foes at this critical time of her administration.

Renato Reyes, secretary general Bagong Alyansang Makabayan
The early pardon of Estrada by PGMA is timed to blunt the negative impact of the damning testimony of Joey de Venecia vs Mrs. Arroyo and FG Mike Arroyo. The motive for granting the pardon is utterly self-serving for Mrs. Arroyo. we are wary of the motives of Mrs. Arroyo in granting the pardon.. Gloria is simply out to neutralize her political rivals. Expect more political tension to arise because Mrs. Arroyo's allies may not accept what PGMA did.

Alberto Lim, executive director Makati Business Club
We are disappointed especially with the timing dahil maraming nangyayaring gulo ngayon like the revelation today of JDV III at the senate ZTE hearing at ang issue ng suhulan.

Black and White Movement
Message is clear. You can steal all you want and get away with it.
