MANILA, Philippines - Here is another reason why "it's more fun in the Philippines," as claimed by the country's new tourism slogan.

The Philippines is the eighth friendliest country in the world for expatriates, according to the results of HSBC's Expat Explorer Survey released last year.

HSBC surveyed 3,385 expats in 100 countries between May and July 2011, but the findings only ranked 31 nations because those with less than 30 respondents "were deemed statistically insignificant," Forbes.com reported.

The countries were ranked based on four categories: ability to befriend locals, success in learning the local language, capacity for integrating themselves into the community, and ease in which they fit into the new culture.

"This country is friendly on wallets, too: 47% report an increase in access to luxuries, including domestic staff, swimming pools and owning properties," Forbes.com said about the Philippines, citing the results of the HSBC survey.

Topping the list of the world's friendliest countries is New Zealand, which had high scores in all four categories.

Below is a list of the top 15:

  1. New Zealand
  2. Australia
  3. South Africa
  4. Canada
  5. United States
  6. Turkey
  7. United Kingdom
  8. Philippines
  9. Spain
  10. Malaysia
  11. Brazil
  12. Italy
  13. Mexico
  14. Singapore
  15. France

The most challenging countries for expats, according to the survey, include Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Russia and India.

Western Expat Bias

Most, if not all, of the ones who were surveyed were probably Western expats since there is clearly a bias for English culture.

The Canadians are definitely less rude than the Aussies.

The Malaysians are definitely less rude than many Americans who give you the finger all the time.

This survey is obviously not accurate.

Fine line between fun and insanity

As you can see from the response of this reader, there is a fine line between fun and insanity.

It's like that Love Radio joker who keeps laughing from Arkham Asylum. This reader seems like he or she is having fun, but he or she is experiencing pain and suffering inside.

It's more fun when you are NOT in the mental hospital.
