MANILA, Philippines – Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) hopes to generate online buzz once again as it unveils its first new sandwich for the year.
Dubbed the BBQ Shredder Sandwich, the new product contains “tender chicken shreds drenched in delicious smoky barbecue sauce,” as well as “fresh lettuce and tortilla chips, giving this chicken sandwich some added crunch.”
It is priced at P55, and P85 as a “meal combo” with fries and drink.
“The BBQ Shredder Sandwich is a fun and unusual take on the chicken sandwich. With it, KFC hopes to inspire people to make changes in their daily lives – no matter how small. It could be as easy as shredding your usual choice and trying out this new sandwich,” Natalie Perez, marketing director of KFC Philippines, said in a statement.
“There’s nobody who enjoys eating so good food more than Filipinos and we want to do right by them with something new and exciting as we begin 2013,” Perez added.
Filipino Internet users had mixed views about the new sandwich, as evident on KFC Philippines’ Facebook page.
Some of them said they enjoyed eating the BBQ Shredder, while others simply called it “awful.”
“Tried this as well and it’s actually good, I liked the chips in it!” said user Sonny Jeremiah Macalino.
“Super panalo ito!” said user Paul Caasi Palmero.
“Tried this today. For me, it’s not masarap,” said user Melody Tan.
“This sandwich was absolutely awful. All the while, I couldn’t help but think it was a cheap way to rid oneself of chopping board chicken meat in a sad, sad sandwich. Desperately needs some more meat, smokiness and a slice of cheese. Overall, this thing sucks,” said user Wacky Torres.
KFC Philippines made it to the popular website Huffington Post twice last year for its unique offerings. This after the fast food chain installed an actual bed in one of its branches last November, and launched a product called Mac and Cheese Bites days later.
Also receiving a lot of social media buzz was the artery-choking Double Down sandwich, which contained bacon, cheese and a “special” sauce sandwiched between two fried chicken fillets.
