'Impeachment Trials. More Fun in the Philippines'

Atty. Karen Jimeno and Rep. Romero “Miro” Quimbo
MANILA, Philippines - As the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona continues, all eyes are on Corona and the lawyers handling the case.

Faced with the difficult task of talking to the media and ensuring Filipinos understand what they are doing, the prosecution and defense have fielded spokespersons who have so far proven very successful in handling, and even diverting, public interest.

Armed with solid credentials, these lawyers are more than a pretty face, though it seems hard for Pinoys to believe that it is possible for people to have a surplus of both looks and intelligence, such as is the case with Atty. Karen Jimeno, defense spokesperson, and Marikina Rep. Romero “Miro” Quimbo, who speaks for the prosecution.

Jimeno studied law at the University of the Philippines, and attended Harvard Law School in the US for her Master of Laws. She married Evan McBride, an investment banker, on January 7 prompting Supreme Court spokesman Jose Midas Marquez to remark to the media before the impeachment trial started that Jimeno will be “spending her honeymoon at the Senate.”

Quimbo also got his Bachelor of Laws from the University of the Philippines. Aside from holding government positions, he has served in executive positions in different companies. He is married to Stella Alabastro, a professor at the UP School of Economics.

Jimeno and Quimbo, in serving as impeachment lawyers and spokesperson, have amassed quite a following. Their “fans” admire their intellect, and also praise their looks.

Twitter users ranging from teenagers to media personalities, both male and female, have said that she is “very pretty,” “graceful” and “dignified,” and remarked that people are watching her instead of paying attention to the facts of the impeachment case. Some have even said that she is their “Babe of the Day."

On their blogs, netizens have labeled the defense team’s “gorgeous spokesperson,” and praised her for having both beauty and brains.

Cementing her internet fame is a newly-created Facebook fan page entitled “Karen Jimeno Courtroom Crushie.”

As of posting time, it had 163 likes, and several posts, including a photo of her supposedly at her wedding, and a play on the Department of Tourism “More Fun” campaign featuring a photo of her with text which says “Impeachment trials. More fun in the Philippines.”

One photo posted on the page’s wall featuring Jimeno and Atty. Tranquil Salvador III, page administrators said “Nagsisisi na’ko at hindi ako nag-aral ng mabuti. Kung nagpatuloy lang ako sa abugasya, siguro ako na ang katabi mo diyan.”

Quimbo, whom a real estate magazine has called a “pretty boy” as well as a “man of substance,” has a fan page, but it only had 13 likes as of press time, and seems not to have been created by admirers of his good looks.

However, he has not lacked for attention from netizens of all persuasions, who rave about the “head-turner” congressman and say that the he is now their crush because he is “super cute.”

Not all like his looks, however. One netizen said she did not like Quimbo’s hair because it is “pa-bagets.”
