MANILA, Philippines – About a decade ago, singer Pops Fernandez launched her own clothing and accessories label Pipay, which showed her passion for fashion.
Under the brand, Fernandez sold casual wear such as shirts and jeans, as well as accessories. All these were distributed through the Anonymous chain of boutiques owned by her friends, Rico and Tina Maristela-Ocampo.
But after three years, Pipay was closed down as Fernandez “had difficulty finding enough time to give it the personal attention it required,” as reported by StarStudio Magazine in its February 2013 issue.
Fast forward to 2013, Fernandez is busy dabbling in fashion once again, this time through her online shop.
Called CheApipAy (www.cheapipay.com), the “one-stop online store” sells women’s items, from customized dresses and gowns to shoes and beauty and wellness products.
It even has a section dedicated to pre-owned designer bags such as Balenciaga.
“It’s online, so you don’t have to go anywhere, anymore, ‘di ba?” Fernandez said of her newest fashion venture, which started in February 2012.
“What we do is, you see it, and you like something, then you order. Of course, a lot of Filipinos still have to get used to the fact na they can buy online. We’re making them aware of it, making them comfortable with the idea that you can buy na online and you don’t have to go anywhere. Kasi in the States, everything is online na. Even if you order food, everything is done online,” she added.
Fernandez said she gets products from different sources. Her newest item on the website, she said, is a collagen drink that promises to help in skin and tissue repair and regeration.
“[When people call and offer products] I welcome them because the items are, of course, very nice and hip. Okay naman iyon sa akin,” she explained.
While she enjoys singing, Fernandez said she still wants to try out something new once in a while, thus her foray into fashion.
“In life naman, you don’t have just one dream, ‘di ba? In the business, when it comes to concerts, I’ve done so much. Lumipad na ako, nabasa na ako. What more could I do? I pretty much felt that parang ang dami ko na palang nagawa, okayy na ‘yon. I just wanted to try out something that was different naman,” said Fernandez, who was once dubbed as the Philippines’ “Concert Queen.”
This does not mean, however that she plans to leave her music career anytime soon. In fact, she will hold a Valentine concert at the SM Mall of Asia Arena with her former husband Martina Nievera, and celebrity couple Ogie Alcasid and Regine Velasquez.
