The Kapamilya actor and fellow surfers Buji Libarnes and Nikki Dela Paz held a kick-off party on Wednesday night for "Single and Unattached," which is said to be the first single-fin longboard contest in the Philippines.
The competition will be held in La Union by Coast Thru Life (CTL), a surfing group founded by the trio which started out as a blog.
"It's all about surfing and it sort if became an advocacy -- we help save the environment. Tinutulungan namin 'yung mga surfers ng mga kaibigan namin na mag-distribute ng mga filters," he told ABS-CBN News.
For its first major project, CTL will take part in celebrating the 15th year of the La Union International Longboard Open.
Set for February 8 and 9 at the Urbiztondo Beach in San Juan, La Union, "Single and Unattached" is seen as "traditional" competition for surfers of varying levels of experience.
Explaining the contest's name, Rosales said, "[it] will be using single-fin longboards -- ito 'yung mga ginagamit noong unang panahon pa, 'yung mga classic style."
"And 'unattached' kasi wala kaming leash, hindi namin gagamitin 'yung leg rope sa paa sa surfboard," he said.
Libarnes added, "This will be the first traditional long board competition in the Philippines. A first of its kind, so it's exciting."
The competition will have be divided into the following categories: Men’s Classic Invitational, The Women’s Classic Invitational, The Tiny Toes Invitational (juniors aged 16 and below), the Newly Single Invitational (amateur surfers), and Expression Session.
According to Rosales, a concert will also be held on February 9 featuring performances from several local bands. The Kapamilya actor said he will also perform at the event.
