MANILA, Philippines - A non-scientific poll conducted by ABS-CBNnews.com on social networking sites Facebook, Twitter and its home page reflected that people online are generally not satisfied with government efforts to help the victims of the Negros-Cebu earthquake.

The question “Are you satisfied with the government’s response to the Visayas quake?” yielded a majority vote for option “What response?” (34.42%), meaning they could not see the government doing anything to help people affected by the quake.

A close second was “So far so good,” (29.23%) while third was “Too early to tell” (22.88%). Last was “Could be better” (13.46%). However, the results are not statistically significant, and may not be reflective of the opinion of the whole Filipino populace.

On Facebook, people say the government is moving too slowly. “The national government should augment the LGUs ASAP,” said one user. Another said they are receiving too little information from their local government.

Others say people should not blame each other because it will not do any good.

“Sino sa inyo ang nasa Japan at California nang tinamaan sla ng lindol na kasing lakas? Alam ba ninyo na hindi rin sila nakakilos agad? Walang nakaaalam kung kailan ang lindol, kung saan at kung gaano kalakas ito para makapaghanda,” said Lito Madrasto on Facebook.

Today, on his birthday, President Benigno Aquino III went to affected areas in Visayas to assess the damage caused by Monday’s tremors. He presided over a National Disaster Risk Reduction and Managemend Council (NDRRMC) meeting in Dumaguete, and reassured quake victims that the government is allotting funds for relief.

To explain the delay in arrival of relief goods to earthquake victims, officials have blamed badly damaged roads.

According to Dumaguete Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria, rescue teams will have to walk on foot or ride helicopters in order to go to areas such as Guihulngan City and four other towns badly affected by Monday’s earthquake.

Guihulngan is 20 kilometers away from Dumaguete. With a report from Mornings@ANC
