Filipino designer needs votes to show off dress in Oscars
MANILA, Philippines - Filipino fashion designer Oliver Tolentino is asking his kababayans (countrymen) for support as he competes for the opportunity to have his creation worn by the on-stage awards escort in the 82nd Academy Awards.
Tolentino was picked as one of the nine finalists in the "Oscars Designer Challenge," the second in a row that a Filipino made the cut.
Last year, designer Alan del Rosario was a finalist in the said competition.
Online voting determines the winning dress which will be worn by the escort model that brings the Oscar statuettes onto the Kodak Theatre stage.
The last day for voting is March 1, with the winning creation to be announced live during the Oscars' pre-show on March 7.
"I'm so happy and confident because there's a good reaction about the gown, especially when I explain it. And if only they knew how hard to do this, it took us like months," Tolentino said.
Made from pineapple and abaca, Tolentino's mermaid gown showcases distinctly Filipino materials. The designer expressed excitement over the possibility of seeing a proudly Philippine made dress during the Oscars, which is considered as Hollywood's biggest night.
"I'm not only promoting myself, but I'm promoting our country (as well). This is our entry," he said. Report by Yong Chavez, ABS-CBN North America News Bureau. Photo taken from the Oscars website.
In the Philippines, Velvet Channel (SkyCable Channel 53) will air the complete coverage of the Oscars live on March 8, starting at 6 a.m. ABS-CBN Channel 2, meanwhile, will air the main ceremonies on the same day.
