MANILA, Philippines - An interactive video has been released in the Philippines to help students delay sexual activities.
Entitled The Power of You, the video was made by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the Department of Education (DepEd) as part of their campaign against sexually transmitted diseases (STD) such as the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
Its main message revolves around abstinence -- how people should not be pressured to be sexually active at an early age. The video also discourages unprotected sex and having multiple sex partners, saying that these contribute risks to a person's health and well-being.
The Power of You adopts a teleserye (Philippine drama) format with a twist -- students can select the decisions that the main characters, Francis and Sara, will make.
For example, viewers can choose to see what happens if a character falls prey to peer pressure and engages in casual sex. After seeing that clip, they can go back and watch what will take place if the character opts to focus on his studies instead.
"Today, young people learn things better if information is presented to them in a novel and exciting way, and Power of You does just that," said UNICEF country representative Vanessa Tobin.
The Power of You was initially piloted in 29 public schools nationwide, and is targeted to reach 12,000 high school students this year. Report by Willard Cheng, ABS-CBN News
