Carinderia crawl: Carol's Eatery on Retiro Avenue, QC

Jerry Razon, 45 years old, has been a barber for about 25 years.

He says he did not have a formal training and mastered the skill through experience; his father taught him the trade. The Pampanga local recalls that when he was young, he traveled a lot with his scissors so that he could cut hair and earn money while enjoying new sights. Razon now works at Roy’s Barber Shop along Retiro Avenue in Quezon City.

On this installment of Carinderia Crawl, he goes to Carol’s Eatery and orders the Ilocano vegetable dish dinengdeng and fried lapu-lapu (grouper).

What’s nice about Carol’s Eatery is that they know how to please their customers. Even though many orders are coming during lunch time, they still deliver the food quickly. The carinderia also knows how to present their dishes well and they keep their space clean.

Razon liked the dinengdeng because, he says, it tasted different from what he's used to eating in Pampanga. He also commends the fried lapu-lapu because it is freshly cooked and not oily. According to him, the combination of dinengdeng and lapu-lapu with atchara was a good choice for lunch.

WHAT HE ATE: Dinengdeng, lapu-lapu with atchara and two cups of rice for P140.

WHAT HE THINKS: He could taste the different flavors of each vegetable used in dinengdeng, while the lapu-lapu with atchara, though it tasted ordinary, was still noteworthy because of the big serving portion.
