Sun, sand and surf at La Union
For a few hundred pesos, locals and foreigners alike can try riding the waves of La Union, one of the Philippines' top surfing destinations.
Here in San Juan, La Union, surf board rentals range from P100 to P300 only -- a friendly budget for surfing enthusiasts as well as tourists who want to try their luck at the sport.
But if you're the type who wants to drop by La Union just to see the surfers in action, don't fret -- entrance at the beach in San Juan is free.
"La Union has one of the best waves, it's also all year round," pro surfer Mickey Girl said, adding, "Go out and enjoy the waves and surf [here]!"
Geremy Cacaninda, vice president for events at the La Union Conventions and Visitors Bureau, said they are aiming to make San Juan the surfing capital of the Philippines so La Union would be a more popular tourism destination in the country.
In line with this effort, the bureau holds the annual Summer Chill -- a 2-day event that includes barbecue cook-offs, bartending competitions, bonfire parties, live bands, body painting, fire dance, and of course, surfing.
"[The Summer Chill] is to promote La Union as a tourism destination," Cacaninda said.
