Pregnant Oregon man is half-Filipino
An Oregon man who claims he is pregnant through artificial insemination is a Filipino, the ABS-CBN North America Bureau confirmed Saturday.
In an interview with ABS-CBN North America news correspondent Monette Rivera, Thomas Beatie’s wife Nancy said her husband, 34, has a Caucasian mother and a Filipino father.
Nancy, however, refused to mention the father’s name and where they are from in the Philippines.
Prior his sex change operation, Beatie was officially born in Hawaii as a baby girl, Tracy Lagundino, Rivera reported.
Beatie now lives with Nancy in Oregon, where they run a T-shirt business.
Beatie gained worldwide attention after he announced through an article in www.advocate.com, an online magazine for gays and lesbians, that he is pregnant. He included a photo of himself, taken when he was about 22-weeks pregnant.
Officially a man
He also legally changed his status, so that he is now, under US law, a man.
Beatie said that he decided to retain his female reproductive organs so that he and his wife--who had her womb removed due to a medical condition--could have a child. After a year of preparation, he finally became pregnant through artificial insemination
Beatie wrote in his article at www.advocate.com:
"Sterilization is not a requirement for sex reassignment, so I decided to have chest reconstruction and testosterone therapy but kept my reproductive rights. Wanting to have a biological child is neither a male nor female desire, but a human desire.
"Ten years ago, when Nancy and I became a couple, the idea of us having a child was more dream than plan. I always wanted to have children. However, due to severe endometriosis 20 years ago, Nancy had to undergo a hysterectomy and is unable to carry a child."
Second pregnancy
His wife Nancy told ABS-CBN North America that they are overwhelmed by all the emails and responses from all over the world. At this point, they are trying to rest and go on with their lives.
Beatie, who recently appeared in the US TV show "Oprah", said that he is due to give birth in July to a baby girl. He also appeared in a CNN report, where he was shown having an ultrasound to prove he really is pregnant.
