Marvin Agustin to bring Hawaii's Teddy's Bigger Burgers to PH

MANILA – The gourmet burger trend shows no signs of slowing down with another foreign franchise set to open in the Philippines.

The Hawaii-based Teddy’s Bigger Burgers, which started in 1998 in Honolulu and has since expanded in the US mainland, is expected to open its first outlet in the Philippines in July at Greenbelt 3 in Makati.

It will be the latest foreign burger chain to open in Manila, which already hosts branches of Johnny Rockets and the recently opened Caliburger.

The Hawaii burger chain, whose specialties include ground chuck flame-broiled burgers and old-fashioned shakes, will be the first international franchise for the High Jap Group, whose restaurants include Sumo Sam, Marciano’s, Akira and the newly opened Banzai.

Among the owners of the High Jap Group is actor-businessman Marvin Agustin.

Ricky Laudico, one of the partners in the High Jap Group, said that as early as now a second branch of Teddy’s Bigger Burgers is already being eyed at the Newport Mall at Resorts World Manila.

“When that happens, there will be a burger craze in Manila,” Laudico said during a preview of Banzai, a Japanese buffet restaurant at SM by the Bay at the Mall of Asia complex.

Teddy’s Bigger Burgers is a “reinvention” of the ‘50s style burger joints, according to its website. Its signature burgers include American classics such as the Western burger (with cheddar, bacon, onion rings and barbecue), the chili cheeseburger and the Cajun burger (with spicy seasoning and pepperjack cheese).

But given its Hawaiian origins, Teddy’s Bigger Burgers also has the Hawaiian Style, which has grilled pineapple and a teriyaki sauce.

“Merong mga suggested burgers but you can also build your own burger,” Laudico said.

Burger toppings listed on the menu of Teddy’s Bigger Burgers as posted on its website include classic ingredients like bacon, mushrooms and grilled onions to more adventurous choices like blue cheese, peanut butter, avocado and jalapeno.

Other dishes on the menu include create-your-own salads, other sandwiches like grilled chicken breast, veggie burger and pastrami, and sides such as potato tots and beet-battered onion rings.

Laudico said they have already sent their crew to Teddy’s Bigger Burgers for training ahead of the July opening.

High Jap Group isn’t just looking at Teddy’s Bigger Burgers for its expanding restaurant portfolio, which also includes the Filipino concept Dekada and the Italian restaurant Balboa.

“We’re planning to bring in a few brands this year,” Laudico said, mentioning a “Singaporean-Japanese concept” and a New York-based steakhouse.

“One of our visions is to be a house of brands, good brands,” he explained, “and these are exciting cuisines. We really like to feature them.”
