Make your own book bag and tote bag for school
MANILA, Philippines – Old clothes can be very useful in making your own book bag and tote bag for school.
Diana Katigbak, a fashion design student of De La Salle University College of St. Benilde, demonstrated on Friday how to make such bags on ABS-CBN's "Umagang kay Ganda".
|Hip book bags and tote bags can be made out of old shirts, as explained by Diana Katigbak (R) to 'Umagang Kay Ganda' host Phoemela Baranda (L).|
All you need are old shirts, cord or nylon strap, Velcro, sewing materials such as needle and thread, measuring tape, and your creativity. A sewing machine can make the job easier, but you can easily make a bag even without one.
First, lay down a shirt and smoothen out the large back part of it.
Next, make a pattern by placing a book on top of it, marking the cloth around its edges and providing enough allowance for stitches. Allot for space for the other side of the bag. You can use a measuring tape to make sure the size is even on all sides.
Cut the cloth, following the outline. Then stitch up the sides using a sewing machine. You can also sew the edges by hand using straight stitches, running stitches, or back stitches. Add a cord or nylon strap for the handle, and stitch on a Velcro strip to close the opening.
Decorate the bag with iron patches or other accessories.
Katigbak said corduroy, usually used for jackets, is an ideal cloth for book bags and tote bags as it has a thick texture. -- Edited by Karen Galarpe, abs-cbnNEWS.com
