Multiply vows to simplify online shopping

MANILA, Philippines - Social shopping network Multiply recently launched a platform that promises to simplify the process of buying and selling online.

The website, previously a social network similar to Facebook and Friendster, claims to be the widest online shopping portal in the country with 83,000 registered Filipino sellers.

"Much like any other business, it is crucial to determine what your unique selling proposition is. The growth of Multiply as a digital shopping network was rather organic, with netizens first seeing its potential as a business platform," Multiply Philippines chief executive officer Jack Madrid said in a statement.

Multiply decided to focus on "social shopping" last year.

"We listened to the needs of the market and discovered the strength of Multiply, harnessed this opportunity and developed a fully-functioning e-commerce site with the introduction of Multiply Commerce."

Multiply Commerce provides a "marketplace" where buyers can browse at products and services offered in the Philippines and connect to virtual shops from different regions.

It also has payment systems supported by Banco de Oro Unibank Inc., Bank of the Philippine Islands, PayPal and Globe Telecom Inc. so merchants no longer have to open separate accounts.

"Buyers will be paying Multiply.com directly rather than individual shops," Multiply said.

Other features of the new platform include product listings, a buyer protection program and a "shopping cart" where online users can buy several items from different shops in one go.
