Who's cooking in the Obamas' kitchen?
MANILA - When United States President Barack Obama was sworn into office, the whole country and the whole world was excited for change. But there was one person the Obamas just couldn't let go - White House Executive Chef Cristeta Comerford.
Comerford, a Filipina by birth, is reportedly the first woman from an ethnic minority to hold the prestigious White House post. For her accomplishments, Comerford takes a spot in Metro Magazine's list of 20 Global Pinoys this month.
Although she had originally been named as head chef by former First Lady Laura Bush, the Obamas decided to let the talented Filipina stay in charge of the White House kitchen.
"Cristeta Comerford brings such an incredible talent to the White House operation and came highly regarded from the Bush family," said First Lady Michelle Obama.
"Also the mom of a young daughter, I appreciate our shared perspective on the importance of healthy eating and healthy families," she added.
Comerford went to culinary school in the Philippines and then worked at the Viennese restaurant "Le Ciel", as well as in major Washington hotels. After she was "discovered" by President Bill Clinton's chef Walter Scheib and being appointed by the Bush administration, it was all uphill for Comerford's career. By the time of her appointment as head chef, Comerford had already been working at the White House kitchen for 10 years.
Comerford, known as "Cris," originally studied French cooking, later specializing in ethnic and American cuisine.
