The balloons were released by members of the Metro Iloilo Green Team at Trenas Boulevard in Iloilo City.

Locals and foreigners trooped to the boulevard to watch the balloons, which came from Manila.

A few balloons got burnt or refused to fly for some reason.

According to Joemari Agriam, spokesperson of Metro Iloilo Green Team, the hot air balloons that bore the colors of the Philippine flag symbolized love for country, while the white ones symbolized greatness.

The group released the hot air balloons not just to celebrate Philippine Independence Day, but also to remind the public of their responsibility to take care of the environment.

It was also the group's intention to wish former Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro a happy birthday. Teodoro ran in the presidential polls but lost to President-elect Benigno Aquino III. -- Report from Kenneth John Ladigohon, ABS-CBN Iloilo
